My other low-tech habit is that I still use a paper calendar/planner! Have never stopped … kept at it until they came back in style for the bujo crowd.

That was a good holdout! I do love my tech, but there is always still a place for pen and paper!

I don’t use the electronic calendar, either. I paste pages from an analog calendar into my notebook. I had too much trouble trying to remove unwanted recurring events from the calendar app.

I love the affirmation "I am not for everyone." And it's fun to see your mugs! I have two favorites: a modern hand-thrown ceramic white speckled one and another that's brown and from the 70s and has wheat painted on the outside which kinda cracks me up since I'm gluten free. I got that from my Uncle's storage unit clean out :)

Thanks so much for commenting - and for commenting on the affirmation. I love hearing about the mugs, and the irony of the wheat, too. Funny how things like that end up being the things we treasure, too. I hope all is going well with the manuscript edits!

Ah, Amy. Thanks for sharing my post. Yours did have some similar themes for sure! At first, I didn't understand why you couldn't just toss that bad boy in the microwave until I realized your cup is metal! Love that you are doing something new "just because you can!" I have a couple of practical ideas. You didn't ask for them, but I'll just tuck them in, in case...(below). Absolutely get that folding table back out! You should be able to tell, in short order, whether it's the table or you, and then you won't have to puzzle over that anymore. If I remember correctly, you shared some of your colored pencil work on IG. If what's in my mind's eye is some of that work, it was WONderful!

Okay: Ideas

1. Hubby gets his hot beverages in a thermal cup and pours them, little by little, into ceramic cups. That way they stay hot, but he gets to drink out of something other than the thermal cup.

2. In most ways, he is quite tidy, but when it comes to his coffee cups, less so. Every now and then, I have to swoop in the set things right, and I use a bleach solution. Takes those stains right out, and if there's any stubborn bits left, I can get to them with a Scotch-Brite. YMMV. :)

Really enjoyed the home and hearth focus of this essay. ☕️

Thanks, Elizabeth. A silly moment for sure, but sometimes, awareness in simple moments is also a filter for larger things. I love that. It sounds like your husband has a solid coffee system! I think it’s always interesting what approaches we develop, what systems work, and what comforts we take in our routines, right? Thanks for commenting. I read all suggestions!

Yeah, we all hate bleach. But it does get the stains out of coffee cups, and a weak solution in the dishwater makes glasses sparkle.

Really dislike using any kind of chemical, but I allow for bleach on a limited basis since I know it's "food safe." I also know that's said of a lot of other products I don't think of as particularly safe, so...

I use denture cleaner to get stains out of my stainless steel mugs. It works great. I fill it with super hot water and drop a few tabs of denture cleaner it. I let it sit over night. The next day the stains are gone. Also minty fresh. Works great, no scrubbing.

Well, I have heard that. The baking soda and vinegar should work the same, but maybe I’ll give this a try since you’ve had good luck with it!

Amy! Thanks for the nod again! I appreciate it so much. I have a mug I'm in love with. It's silver stainless steel. I've had it for several years, and I'm very attached, it's the only mug I drink out of. I have a lot of other mugs, but I buy them for their bright colors, as a design accent for my kitchen, and of course to offer guests. But I never drink out of them. My girlfriend, early on in our relationship, bought me the exact same stainless mug for the times I spend at her house. I received as a fabulous, loving, mindful gift. I have a bunch of favorite things. I'm not really an acquirer. I don't like having a lot of possessions so when I find something I adore, I stick with it as long as possible. An exception to not acquiring lots of things is a particular tic I have. When I find something I love, whether a coffee cup, a style of shirt, or really comfortable shoes (and that one's really important––I have really fussy feet) I'll often purchase multiples of the beloved product, so that when the current object in use meets its end, the replacement is right there waiting for me. Magic! Also, absolutely adore this week's affirmation. And clinking my cup of coffee against yours, virtually of course, I salute you!

Thank you for this comment, Nan. Great to hear from another one-cup person! I love that you have the same cup at your girlfriend’s house. That’s real dedication to a cup - and really thoughtful in terms of creating continuity of space. I have been someone to buy multiples, so I understand that approach, too! Have a good week ahead.

I just left a comment but forgot to write this: OMG. Ruth Ozeki. I didn't know her writing until about a year ago when I read A Tale For the Time Being. That's all it took. Then The Book of Form and Emptiness, and then everything else she's published. I became a very enthusiastic fangirl, and even watched some videos of her talking about her Buddhist practice and her writing process. I sometimes find myself in local bookstores talking to strangers about my favorite books and theirs (old booksellers never die, they just keep on hand-selling wherever they might find themselves!) I can't tell you how many copies of her books I've sold without being employed in the stores where I sell them. What do you think of her writing? I can't wait for the next one, but I'll have to, because she says she's a slow writer.

Oh, very interesting. I’ll have to look her up. This was the first I’ve read (based on a comment on one of my posts). I need to read A Tale for the Time Being. I’m nearing the end of this one…

A Tale for the Time Being is exquisite. I fell into it and inhabited it until it was over and then I missed the characters as if they were people I knew.

I hope Michelle sees this too, because I will bet she too wants to make you a cup that could be your one cup.

Hah. Lol. It wasn’t a hint for anyone at all. I think everyone’s work is amazing. But I think a one-cup is something we choose ourselves. I’m particular!

I have a couple of questions.

What's your database? I use and love DevonThink. Evernote is too weenie for how I organize information.

How do you get photos to appear next to each other? I can only load one photo at a time to Substack.

Surely you didn’t put that stainless cup in the microwave.

I have a trapline of cups that I like. One of them says “I heart St. Petersburg” and is from the Second and Second café there. I only went to St. Petersburg once to visit some of Robert’s relatives, and I’m never going back there.

That cup is dark brown, which is a big plus because any coffee stains don’t show.

Hi Fran. I use Notion (its database functionality) for databases. (Others use it for notes.)

The cup put in the microwave was a ceramic cup — possible to microwave because it wasn’t stainless steel.

Online info varies regarding stainless steel, but this manufacturer specifically says no bleach.

Substack doesn’t have a format for side by side images — other than the gallery (which is a good option). For images like I have here, I make my own grids.) Depending on what apps you have, there are lots of approaches, including tools like Photoshop, Procreate, and Canva.

I love coffee mugs. My favs are my sweary ones - all the teenagers reach for those first 😂

No clue how to clean your one cup - my stainless one spends a lot of time having a bath aka soaking!

But all this talk of cups has me buzzing with an idea for this weeks spread ;) now to go start it so I don’t forget it!

I am a one cup person too. That one special cup in the morning (and when the morning lasts longer because a take a while to drink it) feels like it has such a nice quiet space and potential for the day. I love how your podcast and Substack overlap and also each venture off on their own a bit. Thank you for sharing both! ☺️
