Since I am planning to start a 6-week read-along of Julia Cameron’s Write for Life with a few people, I want to walk everyone through how to control your subscription to this substack. Substacks are designed, really, as newsletters, and any post “can” be sent to you directly. You’ve probably noticed that I post during the week but you don’t always receive an email. Instead, I include links to those posts on Sunday. All good!
With my plan for the read-along, however, there will likely be an extra post on Wednesday, and I do want to send that to those who are interested in this book and journey. You might not be interested in the read-along at all though, and that’s okay!
You can control your subscription to the Illustrated Life substack and simply “turn off” that section so that you don’t receive notifications.
Here’s how.
If you set up a password when you signed up, then you will want to log in on the substack site. (Click “Sign In” top right.) Go to step 3.
If you did not set up a password and just entered your email address, you may need to get a sign-in link and/or set up a password. You can try this first: go to the bottom of this post where the “subscribe” box would be, and yours will have a check next to the word “Subscribe,” like this:
Try clicking the word “Subscribe.” If it opens a page and shows an error, try the link to reload it. If the page comes up to manage your notification, great. (You can then skip to step 4.) If not (or if nothing happens when you try to click “subscribe”), you will need to request a sign-in link and/or set a password. To do that, click “Sign In” top right and use the option to have a sign-in link emailed to you.
Follow the process to log in. I would suggest you go ahead and set a password, too.
Once you are logged in, click your profile icon (top right) and choose “Manage subscription.”
On the page that opens, you will see that there are several “sections” of my substack. You can choose which ones you want to receive email/notifications about. I am sending the Sunday newsletter via the main “Illustrated Life” section. If you don’t want to receive emails that are related to the other sections, you can toggle them off.
(Note: I may still include links to any of the other sections in the Sunday email. But if I send a separate email about the Read-Along, for example, you won’t receive that if you’ve toggled that section off.)
This gives you total control over what you receive. You can still view posts on the website (or in the app) for all sections, even if you have turned off the notifications.
I hope this helps. The directions might appear a bit different if you are using the app, but this gives you a sense of what you are looking for.
You don’t have to toggle anything off. You know yourself and your email tolerance. Do what is best for you!
