Comic Affirmations, 29-35
An exercise in simplified line and positive thinking, a daily affirmation comic for the 2024 100 Day Project.
I outlined the comic affirmations self-portrait project I am doing for the 2024 100 Day Project in this post. The first 28 are documented here and here and here and here.
29/100: I recognize how small I am…
(Thoughts on day 29: This is a continuation of the one from Day 28. About the art: Playing with scale. Zooming out a bit both artistically and philosophically. Just changing things up for a breather. After letting this panel sit just a bit, I redid the mountain colors. This feels better.)
30/100: And also how large.
(Thoughts on day 30: This is a continuation of Days 28 and 29. It may or may not make sense, but I had something in mind that this multi-part line encompasses. About the art: Zooming back in. Lots of fussing though with parts of it. Glasses confuse things at times. But I could see the issue and reworked things.)
Here are the three days in sequence. It’s not a perfect fit, but I was trying something conceptually.
31/100: I practice things I love with an open heart…
(Thoughts on day 31: These aren’t the words I first used, but this is the start of a sequence. It can also stand alone and is complete in that way.)
32/100: …to find balance…
(Thoughts on day 32: a continuation of day 31, part of a sequence. About the art: most of this is a giant stretch, but I’m going with it.)
33/100: …to nurture growth…
(Thoughts on day 33: a continuation of days 31 and 32, part of a sequence. About the art: a stretch. This is also a conceptual piece that may be totally lost in translation. Trying is the point.)
34/100: …to create things of whimsy…
(Thoughts on day 34: a continuation of days 31, 32, and 33, part of a sequence. I thought this would be the final one, but the image wasn’t right for the words. Whimsy decided it had to have a space in this sequence. So there will be one more. Creating whimsy is not the same as creating things of whimsy. I am really deliberate in how I think about the words. About the art: no, I am not literally doing what is shown. But this image came to mind as a conceptual metaphor, building off of the recent sock monkey post. I’ve been pushing myself this week in ways that may not be obvious. That’s the nice thing about a long growth series though. The syllabus is my own, and is unfolding organically.)
35/100: …to spin and weave beauty.
(Thoughts on day 35: a continuation of days 31, 32, 33, and 34. This could go on forever, but this ends the sequence. Again, the sequence is affirmation and metaphor. About the art: this isn’t the “expected” image in that it isn’t something that appears beautiful (so the words and the image give us something different to puzzle out). Initially, I had planned the final panel to be a crane, but then I used the crane early on. I thought about showing something being drawn, but a previous panel has flowers in a sketchbook. Then I realized the obvious, that words (my words) are also part of the “beauty” that fits in this line of thought. So this is a character at a keyboard. It was a challenging scene in some ways (for me), but I’m happy with the result.
This ends week 5 of this 100 Day Project.

More Information
I have written about the 100 Day Project, working in series, and affirmations several times recently. These posts contain some background on what I’m doing and how I think about this kind of project:
Ah I love these Amy, and I get that they are not literal depictions of active crafts or activities etc. I think they stand beautifully on their own, and I hope people could enjoy them for what they are with out expecting too many explanations or literal interpretations. I was trying to explain to my kids why I thought “puppy dog tails” were part of the nursery rhyme “what are little boys made of?” And it felt very difficult to explain allusion, metaphor, simile-even when they are words alone. I hope you don’t feel that struggle or need to have to define your lovely imagery too!
I love 31 and 32 as a sequence. Are you actually doing origami?
