I actually made a fortune teller this last week! And I taught a small group of students how to fold one. So the tradition gets passed along. It was a Back to School Cootie Catcher and under the flaps were questions for getting to know each other better.

That’s awesome, Jen! I bet the kids had a great time with it. Hope the school year got off to a great start, too.

Creamsicle. I made a cootie catcher a few years ago and it was so much fun. 😁🩷

Funny how they stick with us and come back now and again :)

creamsicle and oh what fun to be reminded of Cootie Catchers. I made one for each guest at a family holiday brunch years ago. Decorated the edges with glitter and wrote different messages inside about gratitude, friendship...Then we took turns reading some of the messages. Happy week ahead dear Amy :)

What a fun idea for using them in a grown-up setting, Carol! I bet your guests had a great time with them.

Well, I thought it was a bit of a clever idea yet found a few in the garbage!! OMG …whatever. Gotta laugh it off, right?

Amy,

I like the idea of serendipity being oblique, coming at you from an unexpected angle, as if you have to squint to see it. That’s how I approach writing. The oblique idea strikes the straightforward one and the collision births a fresh idea. I’m picking up your words, if it’s OK, to use the next time I write about this.

Definitely think oblique is a fitting way to think about it, Fran. I still love your piece on the quality of the oblique in writing!

I LOL’d at the rice pudding comic Amy, I have so been there. Here’s a memory lane we have just opened at our house: I checked out a “choose your own adventure” book at the library for my kiddo. This one was pretty flat in plot and tone but she was captivated. Oh to be so young that the magic of a choice, and a do over, is so mesmerizing. I think it’s the same appeal of the fortune teller game.

Thanks so much for looking at the comic, Lauren! I really appreciate that. Choose Your Own Adventure books, yes! I am glad your house is finding them fun and captivating. I do remember loving those. I think the "do over" is really important, you are right. I still am always tempted for a do over!

Grilled Cheese... with three different kinds of cheese, though... and no bread (cause I can’t) 😬. So, I guess that's grilled bread-cheese sauteed in butter 🤷‍♀️. Ooh, that sounds good. I think I need lunch. Wait… what was the grilled cheese comment for?? I'm really enjoying reading your substack. Thank-you so much ❤️

Lol. Thank you so much. I think I might have had grilled cheese on this same night, but yours sounds much more decadent than mine. Grilled cheese is almost always a good choice. Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

I am just now getting to reading your Substack from last Sunday, Amy, and I wanted to thank you for mentioning the tarot deck. Also, I loved your talk on the fortune teller. I used to love making all kinds of origami as a kid, and of course those fortune tellers too. It made me think of an illustrated version I recently learned about by an artist named Guy Pradel. I thought it was really neat and inspiring. Here is a link to it: https://guypradel.fr/cocotte/

Also, grilled cheese. Always seems like a changing mix these days!

That's a very cool illustrated fortune teller, Erin. Thanks for pointing it out! And I'm happy to mention the tarot deck. Of course! There were many Sundays in that process where we got to hear how it was going.

Creamsicle - although I don’t know what that is and my glass is overflowing right now. Thanks for the reminder to “remember your why” of our journals. And our journeys. This thread is making me hungry for grilled cheese....

Overflowing.... that's pretty wonderful to hear! (Creamsicle would be vanilla ice cream covered in orange sherbet.... on a stick.... like a fudgsicle in appearance.) Thank you for reading and commenting. I always really appreciate your insight.
