This was a sweet read with my first cup of coffee. I’m listening to the birds wake up, considering the word Sophrosyne and reminding myself that it’s Sunday.
Wandering down my own memory lane of shows watched as a kid. I remember the magic window from Captain Kangaroo, too many episodes of Popeye and the Mickey Mouse Club. It was on rerun on our local stations. My favorite after school show was Gilligan’s Island. I adamantly refused to go to dance class because I would have missed it! 🤣
I too would have remembered the body suit man as Mr. Goodbody. It was one of my favorite segments, second only to the moose dropping all the ping pong balls on Captain Kangaroo. The before and after school reruns were also favorites of my sister and I - Gilligan, I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched. If the station changed the morning line up and we no longer got to see Gilligan while eating our breakfast before the bus came, we’d get so mad. Thankfully, they changed the line up a lot!
I watched a bunch of clips (although they are a bit scarce) this weekend, thinking I might include one, and those ping pong ball moments were in most of the ones I pulled up. Funny you should mention that! Yes to these other shows, too! I love that you have really concrete memories surrounding the watching.
Those memories of bits of tv shows from when I was a kid are so magical! That song from Captain Kangaroo about all the things you can do (jumping, jogging, rocking, rolling, rowing…) just fills me with happiness when I hear it! (I found it on YouTube.) We didn’t have a tv until I was a teenager, but I remember during a time we were staying with my grandparents for a while who did have a tv, that song would always be playing when I was leaving for the school bus each morning. Somehow it made me feel like there was so much possibility in life and started my day on a positive note! I love the idea of incorporating these types of things into your illustrated journal.
black and white television was the babysitter of my youth, and i have a litany of remembered programming from the 50s and 60s.
in jr high i would dash home from school to watch ‘dark shadows’. my best friend and i were smitten fans of ‘the man from uncle’, forming our own neighborhood mystery-solving duo we called ‘the girls from auntie.’.
I used to watch Captain Kangaroo and Mr Ed, I Dream of Jeanie…. I gif to wondering this morning why he was even called that - I don’t remember any kangaroos…. Looked it up this morning and he apparently wore a jacket with really big pockets “reminiscent of a kangaroo’s pouch.”
In my poking around, I saw that about the pockets, too, and I saw in really old black and white ones, the pockets on the jackets are exactly that way. I also didn't know that. I feel like I remember the color version.... with the red jacket. Thanks for commenting!

It is Sunday, right?
Thank you for sharing a bit of morning with me! I appreciate you reading - and commenting. I hope it turned out, indeed, to be a really nice Sunday.

Yes! I loved Gilligan's Island, too! That one didn't pop up for me, so I'm glad you mentioned it.

What a wonderful memory, Erin!

youthful abandon, fondly remembered.
Interesting how these things are there, lodged in our memories. I love the renaming you and your friend did.
